The city of Tempe has officially sworn in its first African American mayor in its history: Mayor Corey Woods. Thursday's ceremony took place virtually as the result of the pandemic.

“I want to first of all, first and foremost thank the residents of the city of Tempe," Woods said. "You’ve entrusted me and this entire council with an amazing opportunity to help move our city forward."

Woods spoke about some of his priorities, one including the review and reform of police practices, policies and procedures.

“We need to review how we as a collective city engage with Black, indigenous and people of color and those who are experiencing mental health challenges. We especially need to address training so officers have the tools they need to deescalate difficult situations without the use of force," Woods said.

Woods is currently recovering from COVID-19 and plans to re-double efforts to flatten the curve. Woods was sworn in alongside three council members. Council member Randy Keating, who was re-elected, will serve as vice mayor.
