Both Mountainside Fitness and Life Time Fitness defied the governor’s order to shut down as the state’s COVID-19 numbers skyrocketed at an alarming pace. Both gyms received written notices from the health department, ordering them to close their doors, or face charges.

According to the Department of Health Services, Life Time Fitness announced it would be closing its gyms as of noon Friday — but other services, like clubs and pools, would remain open with the state’s blessing.

“Life Time Fitness complying with the governor’s Executive Order is in the best interest of all Arizonans,” said Dr. Cara Christ, director of ADHS. “We look forward to partnering with Life Time Fitness on developing public health best practices for the fitness industry. We appreciate their willingness to protect Arizonans and provide their time and subject matter expertise.”

Mountainside Fitness is continuing to challenge the governor’s executive order and filed a notice of claim against the state and the governor on Thursday.

"ADHS will move forward with seeking to enforce its Emergency Measures against Mountainside Fitness to protect the public health and welfare against the serious threat posed by COVID-19," the agency said in a statement.
