The Phoenix Police Department says two officers shot and killed a man sitting in a car in the driveway of a Maryvale residence on Saturday.

A Phoenix police spokesperson says the department received a 911 call the afternoon of July 4 requesting assistance.

Police say the caller claimed a man had tried to kill him a week earlier and had returned with a knife.

Police say they were directed to a home where the alleged perpetrator of the threat was located.

The spokesperson said police then found a man sitting in a car in the driveway of the home who refused orders to exit the vehicle. The Phoenix Police Department says the man rolled up the car window, armed himself with a handgun and pointed the gun at the officers.

Phoenix police say the officers then shot and killed the man in the car.

In a Facebook post, Phoenix City Councilmember Carlos Garcia identified the deceased man as James Garcia, and the shooting prompted protests over the weekend.
