The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a high number of calls over the holiday weekend as northern Arizona continues to see a lot of weekend traffic.

The Sheriff’s Office got more than 1,000 calls for service between July 3 and July 5. That included nine search and rescue calls for lost or missing hikers. Most of them were resolved quickly, but two of those calls required a ground team, with air support.

Spokesman Jon Paxton says the Sheriff's Office expected the calls for service. 

“It’s the summer recreational time right now. I think we’re seeing a bigger influx this year due to a number of closures around the country, you know amusement parks, beaches, places like that, that are not open and I think people are starting to kind of rediscover the outdoors.”

Deputies responded to several all-terrain vehicle violations and accidents. They took calls for fire ban violations and took 49 calls for disturbing the peace.
