The Hermosillo Ford plant is one of the largest employers in the city.

The new Ford Bronco Sport SUV will be built at the company’s massive plant in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo, while the two- and four-door Bronco will be built in Michigan, a Ford spokesman told KJZZ. Production is expected to start in October, according to the Sonoran government.

“Our sector benefits a lot, because the list of suppliers is long,” said Gabriel Zepeda, president of the business group Canacintra Hermosillo. Ford is one of the largest private employers in the city, but even more are employed by those suppliers, according to Zepeda.

The announcement comes as cases of coronavirus in the state are growing quickly. In early June, Ford confirmed that four workers had tested positive shortly after the plant restarted operations. Zepeda says the plant and other large employers are taking aggressive action to prevent spread.
