High school seniors vying for athletic scholarships might still get a chance to play fall sports this year. The Arizona Interscholastic Association, which manages high school sports in the state, is planning for a full schedule of fall high school sports.

Executive Director David Hines says if it’s safe to resume sports in the fall, several changes will likely be enforced.

“We have put into place different modifications and adjustments we could make to be able to return back to athletics and competing in as safe a manner as possible,” Hines said.

A lot is unknown about when and how schools might reopen safely in the fall. Gov. Doug Ducey has yet to announce a statewide plan, and individual school districts are setting their own policies.

"If he moves things back then we have a plan to move back but still be able to get some games in and some state competition," he said. "If they move it back further, then we may have to reduce the total number of contests that we have. But unless we just get flat shut down and we can’t do anything, we’re going to have a plan."

Students in schools that move to online-only education will still be allowed to participate in sports, as long as they’re actively enrolled in classes at that school.
