Mexico’s president downplayed the importance of wearing masks as a means to control the pandemic and allow for economic reopening.

Asked whether face masks could play a key role in the economic reactivation underway in his country, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responded that that was “disproportionate” during his morning press conference Wednesday.

“If face masks were an option for reactivating the economy, well I’d put one on right now,” he said. “But it’s not like that. I follow the recommendations of the doctors, of scientists.”

AMLO, as he is known, has rarely been seen in public with a face mask, but did wear one when he visited President Donald Trump earlier in July.
