McDonald’s plans to close 200 locations in the United States this year, including more than half located inside Walmart stores. McDonald’s said the low-volume restaurants were slated to close in future years but thanks to the coronavirus they’ll close this year. 

On Tuesday, the company announced revenue dropped 30% in the second quarter, that covers April, May and June. While some markets — like Australia and Japan are showing sales growth — McDonald’s CEO said in many markets, most notably the U-S, the public health situation appears to be worsening.

On July 24, the fast-food giant announced it’ll be at least another month before dining rooms reopen. When they do, customers must wear masks. 

In a July 28 statement, President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski said, in part: “Our strong drive-thru presence and the investments we've made in delivery and digital over the past few years have served us well through these uncertain times. We saw continued improvement in our results throughout the second quarter as markets reopened around the world.”

As of June 30, 2020, McDonald’s said nearly all its restaurants were serving customers. The Chicago-based company has about 39,000 locations in 100 countries.
