Sonora hopes to improve its response to the coronavirus pandemic in the state’s indigenous communities.

Citing troubling mortality figures, Health Secretary Enrique Clausen said the state is implementing several measures to improve outcomes.

“Of course we haven’t abandoned those communities,” he said.

Oxygen meters are being delivered to a number of such places so that residents can determine when they should seek medical care. Additionally, dozens of midwives and others with community ties are volunteering to ensure that their neighbors are monitoring their oxygen levels and other vital signs.

Volunteers will be compensated for each patient with low oxygen levels that they report to health authorities.
