The Republican primary race for Maricopa County Sheriff is too close to call.

Joe Arpaio, ousted after 24 years as sheriff in 2016, is looking to make a comeback.

Unofficial results show Arpaio neck and neck with Jerry Sheridan, his former chief deputy, as the two former lawmen vie for the Republican nomination.

As of early Wednesday, Arpaio had garnered 36% of the vote, while Sheridan had 37%. Sheridan was leading by more than 500 votes.

Challenger Mike Crawford had 26%.

The winner of the race will face Democratic incumbent Paul Penzone in November.
