A freight train traveling on a bridge that spans Tempe Town Lake derailed July 29, 2020.

Union Pacific has begun sending trains over its bridge in Tempe for the first time since a derailment in late July.

The railroad had hoped to get the bridge repaired and back in service by Friday and managed to complete the work early.

“There’s still a lot of work we need to finish. We’re still doing cleanup, at the moment, so those activities will continue, throughout the next, I’ll say the next week or so. So we still have to do those activities. But we're very glad we’re back up in operation,” said Union Pacific spokeswoman Lupe Valdez.

The cleanup includes repairs to Rio Salado Parkway.
