Amazon plans to expand its Phoenix Tech Hub by moving into a new office in Tempe. On Tuesday, the online retail giant announced it will create more than 500 new tech and corporate jobs.

The jobs will support Amazon operations and retail through marketing, engineering, data science and human relations. The company will lease 90,000 square feet of space at 100 Mill, a complex under construction near Tempe Town Lake, just north of ASU’s campus.

In a statement, Doug Welzel, site lead at Amazon’s Phoenix corporate office, said: “We’ve been able to hire great talent in Phoenix and our teams here have been developing some of Amazon’s latest inventions – now we want to double down on our hiring efforts in the city. We look forward to continue working with the wider Phoenix community and local leaders to attract and develop the best innovators in the region and become a new source of growth for the city’s economy.”

Amazon said workers at its Phoenix Tech Hub handle projects like developing new technologies to improve efficiency in the sortation process, creating new tools for Amazon Photos and inventing new machine learning models that use cloud services to continue personalizing the shopping experience.

Since 2010, Amazon says it’s created more than 17,000 jobs in Arizona, mostly at distribution centers. The Tempe announcement is part of the company’s national expansion of tech hubs in North America that includes a total of 3,500 new jobs. Other cities include Dallas, Detroit, Denver, New York and San Diego.
