'Herd Immunity' Isn't Smart Strategy For Fighting COVID-19 As More Arizona Businesses Open
As more businesses open, public health experts are warning Arizonans to stay vigilant in fighting the spread of the coronavirus.
One of those ways is by ignoring discussions or social media posts about “herd immunity.”
Dr. Shad Marvasti, director of public health for the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix, said, “We don’t have anywhere near the population exposed, infected or recovered or somehow immunized to COVID-19 yet. We’re not going to get to herd immunity until many more people are exposed to the virus or if we have a vaccine which will enable more people to get immunity.”
Marvasti also reminded business owners and managers of their responsibility to ensure state health guidelines are followed, but also urged public health officials to monitor and enforce them.
