Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel wants body-worn cameras on every uniformed law enforcement officer in Arizona.

Adel on Wednesday wrote to Arizona's House and Senate leadership calling for legislative action to require body cameras.

This comes just days after she announced she would not seek criminal charges against the trooper who fatally shot a Black man during a May traffic stop in Phoenix. Trooper George Cervantes was not wearing a body camera when he shot Dion Johnson.

“When trying to determine what happens after an event like this ending with the death of Mr. Johnson, more information is always better, better for prosecutors, better for the public,” Adel said during Monday's announcement.

Adel said her decision in the Johnson case was based on photo evidence and eyewitness accounts.

She called the lack of body cameras in the incident a matter of public concern.
