The Maricopa County Elections Department has received more than 700,000 ballots in early voting as of Tuesday, putting the county on track for a historic voter turnout.

The county mailed out more than 2 million ballots earlier this month, and so far, the pace of returns has exceeded that of the 2016 election.

Votes will be verified early but results will not be available until Election Day.

“So, I can only speak anecdotally, and it seems that voters are excited to participate in this election, and are doing so in a way that works best for them,” said Megan Gilbertson, a spokeswoman with the Maricopa County Elections Department.

Observers from both parties are present when ballots are tabulated. The process can also be viewed by members of the public on the county elections website.
