Democrat Mark Kelly Wins Arizona's U.S. Senate Race
Although Republican Sen. Martha McSally is refusing to concede, the Associated Press has called Arizona's U.S. Senate race for Democrat Mark Kelly.
McSally has now lost two consecutive races for a Senate seat. McSally was defeated in 2018 by Kyrsten Sinema, who became the first Arizona Democrat to serve in the Senate since 1995.
Kelly, a former astronaut who ran as an independent-minded Democrat, will soon join Sinema in Washington.
This was McSally’s second chance to win over Arizona voters, this time as the incumbent. After losing two years ago, she was swiftly appointed to the state’s other Senate seat, left vacant by the late Sen. John McCain.
At an event held Tuesday night, Kelly said his first order of business would be dealing with fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Right now Arizonans who can’t find work because of this pandemic are trying to get by on $240 a week. That doesn't cut it."
Kelly could take office as early as Nov. 30, finishing the last two years of McCain’s term. He will face reelection in 2022.
