National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigators found that exploding shrapnel from a Takata airbag killed an Arizona man driving a 2004 BMW 3-series in September.

Takata airbags were the subject of a major recall several years ago after shrapnel from metal canisters killed at least 27 people worldwide. 

The recall affected more than 63 million airbags in the U.S., and the federal government says more than 11 million of the faulty airbags are still on the roads.

Drivers can check to see if their vehicles have been recalled by going to https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and keying in their 17-digit vehicle identification number.

The recalls drove Takata into bankruptcy, and several of its executives faced criminal charges.
