Mexico Passes 1 Million Confirmed COVID-19 Cases
Mexico has now passed 1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases.
That grim milestone comes as the country is also approaching 100,000 confirmed deaths, according to federal data.
“It’s a bit inconsequential, but in terms of news, it's attractive every time there’s a round number, to announce it,” said Prevention and Health Promotion Sub-secretary Hugo López-Gatell.
He said the figure provided a limited view of the situation, and noted that with suspected cases, the total cases already well exceed 1 million. More important is the fact that the epidemic remains very active in the country, he added.
There are an estimated 47,000 active cases, according to data he presented.
There has been far less testing in Mexico than other countries around the world. In Sonora, roughly 72,000 tests have been done, compared to nearly 2 million diagnostic tests in neighboring Arizona.
