Arizona hit over 4,000 cases of COVID-19 in a single day both Thursday and Friday. This is the highest for any single day since early July, but Gov. Doug Ducey made it clear that aside from some minor changes, no new restrictions would be authorized.

He said in a video released earlier this week that he wanted to keep “blood safely pumping” through the economy.

But Doug Walls, research administrator for the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity, says it’s the rise in cases that is putting a dent in the state’s economic recovery.

“We know that back in, at the end of May through June and July, we saw a dramatic increase in positive COVID-19 cases. And because of that we saw consumers kind of draw back from some of the services and shopping,” Walls said.

Walls announced the Arizona unemployment rate hit 8.0% in October, up from 6.5% in September and 5.9% in August. That is still less than the 10.7% reached over the summer.
