A mask mandate is in effect in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, after the state Congress passed the measure earlier this month.

Sonoran legislators unanimously approved the new law requiring face masks in all public spaces and business establishments and when using public transportation.

The goal is to strengthen health measures that prevent the spread of COVID-19 as temperatures cool and cases continue to rise.

However, there are no sanctions attached to the law, which says that state and municipal health authorities will be responsible for enforcing the use of face masks.

On Thursday, Mexico surpassed 100,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths. In Sonora, there have been nearly 3,300 deaths and over 40,000 confirmed cases.
