As President-elect Joe Biden considers his Cabinet choices, Native Americans are urging him to to select one of their own for Interior Secretary.

The Department of Interior manages parks and monuments throughout the United States. It also oversees 600 federally recognized tribes.

Tribal nations turned out in large numbers in the November election, and a Native American, Deb Haaland, has emerged as a possible candidate for the job.

Dozens of tribal officials and activists are pushing for the New Mexico congresswoman to be selected.

Another New Mexico lawmaker, Tom Udall, is also a front-runner.

Udall’s father, Stewart, was appointed secretary of interior during the Kennedy administration.
