A nationwide eviction moratorium imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is set to expire Dec. 31.

As that deadline approaches, the city of Tempe is offering nearly $2 million in new funding for emergency rent and mortgage assistance.

The funds will help Tempe residents affected by COVID-19. Applicants who qualify may receive up to $10,000 or six months of payments.

The funds can be used to make back payments, and those who have received assistance in the past may still qualify. If past programs are any indication, the new funds should dry up quickly, said Levon Lamy, Housing Services manager with the city of Tempe.

“It is for you to stay in your current residence. It’s to keep you housed, so you’re not, you know, facing eviction or foreclosure once the moratoriums end in December,” Lamy said.

Tempe also offers programs to help with utility payments, groceries and job fairs.
