U.S. Sen.-elect Mark Kelly will lose the elect portion of the title on Wednesday.

Kelly, a Democrat, defeated Republican Sen. Martha McSally in a special election that determined who would serve the remaining two years of the late Sen. John McCain’s six-year term. That allows Kelly to be sworn in anytime after Arizona’s election results are certified on Monday.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Arizona time.

Once Kelly is sworn in, both of Arizona's U.S. senators will be Democrats for the first time since the 1950s. Democratic Sen. Krysten Sinema also defeated McSally in the 2018 election for Arizona’s other Senate seat.

It also means the Republican majority in the Senate will shrink by one vote.
