A Valley bike-sharing program is shutting down by the end of the year.

Grid Bike Share will cease operations in Phoenix and Tempe on Dec. 31. In a statement to customers, the company cited the changing landscape as the reason for the shutdown.

Grid Bike is owned by a company called Cycle Hop. The bike-share program began in Phoenix six years ago.

Ashley Patton is a spokeswoman for the Phoenix Street Transportation Department. She says the city will continue to look for new partners to enhance multimodal transportation.

“We are hopeful that in the future we will be able to implement another regional bike share, or similar program," Patton said, "potentially again collaborating with surrounding municipalities.”

Patton says downtown Phoenicians still have access to electric scooters that can be used for short trips or last-mile transportation needs.
