Sonora’s economy has been battered by the coronavirus pandemic, but major investments are still being made.

In a recent release, Gov. Claudia Pavlovich touted a number of recent investments, including significant expansions of beer manufacturer Constellation Brands and major modifications of Ford Motor’s massive plant in Hermosillo.

The $1.5 billion Ford investment was necessary to manufacture the new Ford Bronco Sport, according to Jorge Vidal Ahumada, the state’s economy secretary. November output of that model nearly equaled the total output of the previous models manufactured there the same month last year, according to federal data.

Those and other sizable investments reflect what Pavlovich said was the confidence companies have doing business in the state.

But the state also is facing a resurgence of cases, and is responding with restrictions that could again impact the state’s economy.
