Authorities in neighboring Sonora have shut down a major mall for not complying with pandemic protocols.

On Sunday afternoon, state health authorities shuttered most of Galerías Mall for not following new limits on occupancy. Several stores with their own entrances were allowed to remain open, according to a health department spokesman.

“It must be enforced equally at every type of business that is receiving clients at their locations,” said Ruben Lopez, head of the Hermosillo Merchants Union, which represents several stores in the mall.

He also said he saw some of the same crowding issues at Galerias stores allowed to remain open, and that there is widespread noncompliance at an annual outdoor market in downtown Hermosillo.

But the rules are critical to slowing coronavirus spread, and he urged shoppers to only go to stores where mask wearing and other protocols are observed.
