Viewing, Services Planned For Former Phoenix Councilmember Calvin C. Goode
A public viewing will be held Saturday to honor the memory of Calvin C. Goode, Phoenix’s longest serving council member.
During his 22-year tenure, Goode was often called the "conscience of the council." He’s credited with moving forward an ordinance that banned workplace discrimination and pushed Phoenix to recognize a holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Dec. 23, Goode died from a non-COVID-19 related illness at the age of 93. The public viewing will take place from noon to 4 p.m. at the Calvin C. Goode Municipal Building, which was named after him when he retired.
An inscription on the building reads: “Guided by a deeply held belief in God and in the equality of all people, his lifetime exemplified a powerful commitment to improving the quality of life in Phoenix, especially for young people."
Free parking will be available at the garage located at 305 W. Washington Street. The viewing will take place at 251 W. Washington St., Phoenix. Visitors are asked to use the entrance on the north side facing Washington Street.
The city said face masks are required and 6 feet social distancing markers will be in place. Disposable masks and hand sanitizer will be provided.
Virtual memorial services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. via Zoom and Facebook Live.
