Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is considering expanding sports betting beyond horses.

With gaming compacts set for renewal, Ducey has negotiated with Arizona tribes, paving the way for off-reservation professional sports betting and possibly college sports betting.

Ducey also wants to make this type of gambling possible on mobile devices. 

"Our goal is to bring Arizona gaming into the 21st century," said C.J. Karamargin, a press aide for the governor. "A lot has changed since the first compacts were signed, back when cellphones weren't the thing they are now. The world looks a lot different today and our proposal is intended to reflect the way people live their lives today."

But Ducey still needs legislative approval. And legislators would have to repeal state laws that prohibit such gambling.

If repealed, Ducey could also allow wagering on fantasy leagues and instant keno games as well.
