A now former Customs and Border Protection officer from Nogales was sentenced last week for a corruption scheme at the U.S. Mexico border.

Jose Rosalio Fuentes pleaded guilty to a bribery charge and sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

The case dates back to 2018 when Fuentes allowed a convicted felon to enter the U.S. through the Nogales Port of entry in exchange for a $6,000 bribe.

Prosecutors say Fuentes only pretended to swipe the individual’s identity card, then met up with the person later to accept the bribe. It’s not clear from the court paperwork whether Fuentes was already under surveillance or whether the case was later uncovered.

Prosecutors say Fuentes proposed the scheme. He will also serve probation and pay back the bribe money.
