MEXICO CITY — Like former president Donald Trump, Mexico’s president has been criticized for favoring the economy instead of measures to stop the pandemic, as well as for not following health protocols. But on Sunday, the president revealed that he has contracted COVID-19.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has appeared to ignore the coronavirus’s impact  by not wearing face masks, holding massive gatherings and providing recommendations without any scientific evidence.

Last year, the president said that the COVID-19 can be avoided by not lying, stealing and betraying. He also said a Catholic amulet in his wallet protects him.

On Sunday, the president tweeted that his symptoms are mild, and that he’s under medical supervision.

López Obrador had his first phone call with president Joe Biden last Friday. One of the issues discussed was building a binational strategy to face the pandemic.
