The makers of the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine are expected to apply for emergency use of the shot this week.

Will Humble of the Arizona Public Health Association says the Johnson and Johnson vaccine isn’t as effective at slowing the spread, but is focused on lessening the severity of the illness.

“This new vaccine is less effective at preventing infection in the first place, but it’s very effective at preventing a bad outcome, and especially death,” said Humble.

This new vaccine, which is single-dose, could be available to the public by March if approved for use.

Johnson and Johnson has a $1.5 billion agreement with the federal government to support vaccine development and deliver 100 million doses to the United States by the end of June.
