Sergio Rascón, Well-Known Sonoran Artist, Dies At 58
Sonora’s arts community is mourning the death of one of its best known painters.
Sergio Rascón was born and raised in the northwestern Sonoran city of Caborca, and spent the last decade of his life there dedicated to painting. His sister, Blanca Rascón, remembered her 58-year-old brother as a bright and rebellious person, who pursued his interest in art despite family expectations.
“He started painting when he was 8 years old, he took a correspondence course when he was a child,” she said.
But his parents wanted him to study something more practical in college. He obliged, and returned home to present his degree to them, but then went back to making art, according to Rascón.
His work has been exhibited around the state, Mexico and even Europe. In 2017, he was recognized as one of the state’s most accomplished painters.
