A bill in the Arizona Legislature could make it harder for people to sue businesses and medical professionals for COVID-19-related negligence that results in death or injury.

This Republican-backed bill, Senate Bill 1377, adds protections that some are claiming to be unconstitutional.

Democratic Sen. Kirsten Engel is concerned the language is too broad and protects those who only attempt to comply with COVID-19 safety measures.

"Giving sort of liability protection to those who may have tried but, you know, they didn't try hard enough. And others did. And they spent the money to do so. And yet both of them we're going to treat the same," Engel said.

Engel also questioned the need for such protections given, she said she could only find three related lawsuits in Arizona.
