Colleges across the country are seeing large drops in enrollment due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the largest loss comes from two-year community colleges.

Nationwide, enrollment at community colleges dropped 10% from fall 2019 to fall 2020, according to the National Student Clearinghouse.

They were hit the hardest amid all colleges, and four-year universities experienced only slight declines.

Educational experts say the pandemic has taken a larger toll on adult students, who tend to enroll in community college rather than a four-year university. 

Colleges in Arizona are seeing similar effects.

Enrollment at the Maricopa County Community College District, one of the largest community college systems in the nation, is down by about 15% compared to last fall.
