In spite of the pandemic, Chandler set a construction record last year when the value of issued building permits increased 72% over 2019. The value equaled more than a billion dollars, according to Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke. 

Some of the biggest projects permitted in 2020 included a new high school for Chandler Unified School District, Banner Ocotillo Medical Center, office and industrial development, and residential development.

During his virtual State of the City address, Hartke also praised Honeywell for signing a long-term lease in west Chandler.

“This facility will be producing critically important PPEs, specifically millions of N95 masks for healthcare and government use,” he said. “Honeywell expects to hire hundreds of workers to support the production efforts during the first year with the potential to grow over the coming three years.”

Companies expanding and moving to Chandler, including CVS Health, Intel, NXP, Local Motors and VB Cosmetics, are expected to create 2,500 jobs over the next three years and contribute $437 million in capital improvements.

A city spokesperson said the dollar amount represents private sector money for things like building a new facility, improving an existing building, buying equipment, furniture and other one-time expenses to begin or expand operations.
