A cyber attack late last week has kept the city of Kingman’s computer system shut down for days, and officials don't know when it will again be fully working. 

The breach came the same week that the new federal Homeland Security secretary said he aims to transform how government defends against online threats.

Kingman officials noticed something was wrong on Friday and started turning off servers.

On Saturday, a specialized cyber unit from the Arizona National Guard came in to help.

Now they’re working with the city’s IT department to figure out the scope of the cyber attack and where it came from.

“Systems are going to come back incrementally. It’s not going to be a flip of a switch, things are back up and running 100 percent,” said Coleen Haines, city spokesperson.

Backup servers and network drives have to be reviewed to make sure they were not infected by the cyber attack, Haynes said.

“We’re checking as we’re reviving the system so it’s going to be a very slow process to come back online.”

The cyber attack means residents can’t pay their utility bills online. The city can only process payments in-person or over the phone. Haines said the city is waiving late fees for utility bills.

Kingman’s city court was not affected by the cyber attack.
