Members of the Coalición Mexicana LGBTTTIQ+ Sonora hold a press conference to present their 2021 political agenda in Hermosillo, Sonora, on Wednesday, March 3, 2021.

Ahead of Mexico’s elections in June, members of an LGBTQ coalition in Sonora are urging candidates for state and local offices to sign on to an inclusive political agenda.

The group Coalición Mexicana LGBTTTIQ+ Sonora presented a list of legislative priorities and public policies Wednesday that it said would be a step forward in promoting a more equitable society.

"We urge candidates for popular election to subscribe to the following agenda and to commit to follow up with the action within their power in the position they aspire to," said coalition member Rodolfo Guzmán during a press conference Wednesday.

He said the goal of the public agenda is to push leaders to create policies that address discrimination against the LGBTQ community and other vulnerable groups in Sonora.

The policy changes the group is calling for include banning conversion therapy; guaranteeing access to education, health services and employment for transgender Sonorans; and eliminating barriers to same-sex marriage in the state, among others.

They are also asking all candidates to use inclusive language in all official communications, policy proposals and public speeches.
