Arizona legislators voted Thursday to curb the governor’s emergency powers.

The Arizona Senate gave preliminary approval to a bill that if passed in both the Senate and House would immediately terminate the emergency Gov. Doug Ducey declared nearly a year ago.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Michelle Ugenti-Rita, claims the order has interfered with individual rights. While stay-at-home orders have been allowed to expire, Ugenti-Rita says this bill is also addressing the restrictions on businesses.

The bill needs a final roll call vote in the Senate before going to the House.
