Arizona recently switched to an age-based priority system for determining COVID-19 vaccine eligibility. But county health departments are still working to get vaccines to people in essential occupations. 

In a press release Wednesday, Maricopa County said it’s partnering with Valley Metro, the city of Phoenix, Phoenix Union School District, and Albertsons and Safeway to host vaccination events for transit workers and postal service employees. The county said it will also be allocating vaccines to some restaurant groups for their workers. The county said it will continue to host events for those in other essential occupations as more vaccines become available.

“We are partnering with large companies in these categories to notify their staff of events,” Marcy Flanagan, executive director of Maricopa County Public Health, said in the press release. “Meanwhile, Public Health is working with other partners to reach smaller, local grocery stores, restaurants, manufacturers and farm workers.” 

At these specialized events for essential workers, the county plans to use the recently approved Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which requires only one dose.
