Phoenix police will be able to impound vehicles involved in street racing after the City Council approved an ordinance Wednesday.

Police will have the authority to tow and impound vehicles up to 30 days for violating state laws related to reckless driving and street racing. The ordinance has exceptions for rental cars, stolen vehicles and vehicle owners who were not driving or present during the incidents.

After receiving complaints from residents and businesses, Phoenix launched a street racing task force in November 2019. Since then, police have targeted large crowds that gather to watch high speed maneuvers like burnouts and donuts.

In October 2020, police identified hot spots as: Desert Sky Mall, Costco at 33rd Avenue and Indian School Road, the corner of 67th and Southern avenues, the corner of Central Avenue and Camelback Road, and the corner of 35th Avenue and Thomas Road.
