The U.S. Treasury Department extended the deadline to file and pay federal taxes by one month. A state lawmaker wants Arizona to do the same.

The Treasury and the IRS announced the delay on Wednesday, moving the deadline from April 15 to May 17. In a statement, Republican Rep. Shawnna Bolick announced she’s working on a bill that would have Arizona’s own filing deadline mirror the new federal deadline.

The language, drafted as an amendment to SB 1297, includes an emergency clause that would allow the bill to take effect as soon as it’s signed into law.

“Arizonans should not be rushed to file their state taxes while they still have time to file their federal taxes,” Bolick said in a statement.

But it may not take legislative action to move back the deadline.

In 2020, the IRS delayed the federal tax deadline by three months, from April to July. That same year, Gov. Doug Ducey ordered the Arizona Department of Revenue to delay the state’s own deadline by the same amount of time.

Ducey’s office has not responded to questions about whether he’ll give a similar order in 2021.
