This week, state officials in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, announced that Amazon is set to open a distribution center in the state capital, making it one of five Mexican states where the e-commerce giant has set up shop.

Amazon is set to build a 500,000-square -foot shipping center in Hermosillo, the first in northwestern Mexico.

"I'm very pleased that they've chosen Sonora for one of their warehouses, their distribution centers," said Sonoran Gov. Claudia Pavlovich, who touted the distribution center as a huge benefit to the border state. "Imagine the benefit of having one of the most important electronic commerce platforms in the world, there will be many benefits, starting with the construction of the warehouse itself."

She said the facility will create hundreds of new jobs, boost the economy and provide faster delivery for Sonorans and others in northern Mexico.

Last October, Amazon announced plans to invest $100 million to expand its presence throughout Mexico. Currently the company has distribution centers in three states and has announced construction in a fourth.
