New in-state public university students may not face any tuition increases next school year. 

Arizona State University is proposing no tuition increase for all its students for a second year in a row. The university recognizes the significant financial impact the pandemic has had on many individuals, including students and their families, ASU president Michael Crow said in a statement. 

ASU will however propose fee adjustments, the majority of which Crow said only affect graduate level academic programs and new students. 

Meanwhile University of Arizona is proposing no tuition increase for new in-state undergrads, but is looking to increase it for their new out-of-state peers as well as all graduate students and College of Medicine and College of Veterinary Medicine students. It will also increase tuition for new in-state and out-of-state graduate students. It’s also raising its recreation center fee. 

NAU is proposing no tuition increase for a majority of its students, including all undergraduate students, and no mandatory fee increases, but is looking to increase its student housing and meal plan rates. 

“I appreciate the work of our universities in proposing no increase for resident undergraduate students for the second year. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed financial hardship on many students and this reflects our commitment to ensuring an affordable education even as our institutions experience fiscal challenges wrought from the pandemic. I also appreciate the continuation of tuition guarantee and pledge programs that keep college costs predictable for students,” said  Larry E. Penley, chair of the Arizona Board of Regents which oversees the universities.

The Arizona Board of Regents is holding a virtual public hearing on April 6 to receive comments on the proposals. The board is expected to vote on the tuition and fees proposals for the 2021-2022 academic year on April 15.
