Export manufacturers in Mexico are hoping to get excess U.S. vaccine doses to their workers.

The vaccine rollout is going much slower in Mexico than in the United States, which is currently administering more doses every three days than its neighbor to the south has administered to date, according to data tracked by the New York Times.

As it stands, many workers at Mexican factories that are part of the U.S. supply chain may not get vaccinated until 2022, according to Gerardo Vazquez, head of Index Sonora, which represents export manufacturers in the northern Mexican state.

Such a lengthy vaccination effort could lead to a “delay in the recuperation and economic recovery of our country,” he said.

U.S. companies with export manufacturing plants in Mexico, including Sonora, are currently lobbying for a way for excess American doses to be given much sooner to Mexican workers, according to Vazquez.
