Through our Q&AZ project, one listener asked: Are there any plans to extend the light rail eastward to Power Road in Mesa?

There are no current plans to expand the light rail eastward, but that doesn’t mean Valley Metro isn’t thinking about the East Valley.

According to Madeline Phipps of Valley Metro, multiple studies about the viability of public transportation in Mesa are either in progress, or wrapped up. One idea is expanding the route for the new Tempe Streetcar.

“The Tempe-Mesa Streetcar feasibility study specifically was outlining opportunities to expand the streetcar from its existing route, or to build streetcar off of additional parts of the light rail as it travels east into Mesa,” said Phipps.

If you’re looking to bring more public transport to your area, Phipps recommends voicing your opinions to Valley Metro and local officials.
