A new law passed this week in neighboring Sonora, Mexico, aims to crack down on the use of single-use plastic in part by banning non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Sonoran lawmakers unanimously approved new regulations on the production, handling and disposal of waste, particularly single-use plastics.

The law bans the use of most plastic bags for restaurants, supermarkets, department stores and other businesses across the state, and requires them to incentivize the use of reusable bags.

There will be sanctions including fines for those who break the new rules, as well as financial incentives to help industries move toward more sustainable products.

The law requires all state and local entities to implement and promote the measures, which also include new requirements for trash disposal, separation and recycling.

The law is set to go into effect next year, and lawmakers say changes will be implemented gradually.

Last year, Mexico City has implemented a similar ban.
