A local aid group said the federal government has dropped 100-200 individual migrants at the bus station this week, while a local shelter for them has gone mostly unused.

Maricopa County said it’s working to redirect all releases to the shelter.

The county has been providing the shelter quarantine housing for migrants with COVID-19. Now a county contractor is helping aid groups take migrants found at the bus station to the shelter, where they get tested.

Stanford Prescott, community engagement coordinator for the International Rescue Committee in Arizona, said there have been migrants whose test results were positive for the virus.

“In many cases they have not been informed of their status and they do not understand what that means,” he said.

The local shelter had been helping families when Immigration and Customs Enforcement hired a contractor to give them hotel rooms.

ICE said most individual migrants taken to the bus station have just been released from detention, know their next destination and choose to go there.
