Mothers and other family members of missing loved ones march through downtown Hermosillo on May 10, 2021, Mexico's Mother's Day.

Families with missing loved ones in Sonora have turned Mother’s Day into a day of protest.

Chanting, "where are they? Where are our children?," members of several groups dedicated to searching for the remains of missing loved ones marched through downtown Hermosillo on Monday, Mother’s Day in Mexico. Many of the groups are led by mothers searching for missing sons, like Ceci Flores, founder of the Madres Buscadoras de Sonora.

“We’re going to have a search today, our Mother’s Day,” she told the Sonoran outlet Proyecto Puente. “Instead of being at a party, we will celebrate in the field.”

The work of groups like Flores’ has turned up dozens of bodies, with more than 140 found from late 2018 to the fall of 2020, according to federal data.
