More than $5 billion is coming to Arizona state and local governments. The federal funding comes through the American Rescue Plan, also known as the COVID-19 stimulus package.

The state of Arizona will get more than $4.2 billion to support recovery from the economic and health effects of the pandemic. Maricopa County will receive more than $870 million and Phoenix will get $396 million -that’s $20 million less than the city estimated last month.

Pima County will receive more than $200 million and Tucson almost $136 million. Mesa will get more than $105 million. See the list of Arizona cities and allotments here.

In a news release, U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton (D-9th District) said: “Arizona communities were hit hard by this pandemic, and these funds will be critical to helping our cities recover and restore essential public services,”

Based on federal guidelines, the money can be used in several areas:

  • Covering public health expenses.
  • Supporting households facing food, housing or financial insecurity and providing small business assistance.
  • Helping communities hardest hit by the pandemic.
  • Providing premium pay for essential workers.
  • Investing in water, sewer and broadband infrastructure.

The Treasury will divide $1 billion among all eligible Tribal governments and another $19 billion will be allocated using a formula that includes employment and enrollment data.
