AAA Arizona Expects 546% Increase In Memorial Day Weekend Air Travel

As the vaccination rollout continues and restrictions ease, more people are traveling, and this Memorial Day weekend is no exception.

AAA Arizona spokesperson Aldo Vazquez says they expect a 546% increase in air travel this weekend, when compared to the early pandemic numbers in 2020.

“In total we anticipate about 765,000 people traveling throughout the state. So the bulk of the travel that’s going to be taking place is going to be road trips," Vazquez said.

Sky Harbor airport travel numbers continue to rise too. April numbers show a 1000% increase from last year. While it is an unprecedented year-over-year-change, travel was virtually non-existent in 2020 due to COVID travel restrictions and shutdowns.

Last month, Sky Harbor reported nearly 3.2 million travelers, which in pre-pandemic times was a pretty typical month.
